Origami Owl and Childhelp

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. To raise awareness, Childhelp, a national nonprofit dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse, recognizes a special organization in front of a Congressional committee. This year, Origami Owl received the Childhelp Corporate Award for our involvement in the Childhelp Speak Up Be Safe Program.Origami Owl founders Chrissy and Bella Weems joined Childhelp founders, Sara O’Meara and Yvonne Fedderson on Capitol Hill to support bills aimed at reducing the number of children whose lives are lost due to neglect and abuse. The event, hosted by 11 Congressmen and Congresswomen, not only honored the five children that die every day from abuse and neglect, but also the life of a young woman who, with the support of Childhelp’s programs, beat the odds and has chosen to be a force for good.
Her name is Patricia Boone. She and her younger brother were both abused as children, his life tragically taken at the age of four. She survived, and has since committed her life to protecting other children from the same fate. Now in her 20’s and studying law at Northwestern University in Chicago, Patricia credits the love, guidance and support she received from Childhelp for her ability to overcome her past. Patricia was especially thankful for her time at the Childhelp Alice C. Tyler Village in Virginia, during which she learned to express herself through the art therapy program, and gained peace through working with horses.
In a very moving moment, Chrissy and Bella Weems presented Patricia with a Living Locket they had created just for her. Inside were a series of charms representing her story, including the Artist’s Palette Charm, the Silver Horse Charm, a Birthstone Boy Charm and both the Bully Proof Shield and Silver Heart Hand Charms. Needless to say, Patricia was overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and declared that her new Living Locket would have a permanent place next to her heart. Childhelp then presented Chrissy and Bella Weems with the Childhelp Corporate Award, a beautiful mosaic heart.
Patricia is proof that as Childhelp’s partner, Origami Owl can help save lives. You too, can help. The Bully Proof Shield and Silver Hand Charms were created to support child abuse prevention. All proceeds from the sales of these two new Charms will go directly to Childhelp’s Speak up Be Safe program. To purchase the Charms, visit www.origamiowl.com.
